Downloading and Installing Unreal Engine

This page explains how to download Unreal Engine and install it.

To download and install Unreal Engine:

  1. Download and install Epic Games Launcher .

  2. Sign up for an Epic Games account if you do not have one.

  3. Sign in to Epic Games Launcher.

  4. Install Unreal Engine.

Note:

These instructions cover Windows and macOS. At the time described in the source, no binary Unreal Engine installer was provided for Linux.

To use Unreal Engine on Linux, compile it from source. For more information, see the Linux Quick Start guide.

Download and Install Epic Games Launcher #

The tab Unreal Engine in Epic Games Launcher is where you manage your Unreal Engine (UE) installations. You can install multiple UE versions on the same computer.

To download and install the Launcher:

  1. Open the page Download Unreal Engine .

  2. Select the license type that best matches how you intend to use UE.

The source describes two license types:

    • Publishing , if you plan to make games.

    • Creators , if you plan to create other kinds of content.

      Note:

Learn more about the available license types in the Unreal Engine FAQ .

  3. Click the Download Now button for the license type you selected. This downloads the Launcher installer to your computer. Depending on your operating-system settings, you may need to choose a save location or approve a security prompt before downloading.

  4. When the download finishes, run the installer and wait for it to complete.

Note:

Along with the Epic Games Launcher, this may install other software needed to run Unreal Engine, such as DirectX.

Create an Epic Games Account #

After Epic Games Launcher is installed, you will be asked to sign in with your Epic Games account.

If you already have an account, sign in to the Launcher and continue to the next section.

If you do not have an account, click Sign Up to create one. You can register with your email address or a supported social-media or gaming-platform account.

You can also continue without creating an account by clicking Sign In Later . However, you cannot download or use Unreal Engine without an account.

Note:

Your account information is processed according to the Epic Games Privacy Policy .

After creating your account, sign in to the Launcher.

Install Unreal Engine #

Once you have signed in to Epic Games Launcher, you are ready to install Unreal Engine.

  • Click the tab Unreal Engine in Epic Games Launcher, then click the button Install Engine .

  • (Optional) Click “ Browse ” “Browse” to change the installation path.

  • Click “ Options ” to choose which engine components to install. These include:

You can add or remove components from an installed Unreal Engine version at any time. Click the dropdown arrow beside its Launch button, then select Options .

After choosing the components you need, click “ Apply ” .

  • Click Install and wait for installation to finish. Depending on your system and internet connection, the source estimates 10 to 40 minutes to download and install Unreal Engine, sometimes longer.
