Software Installed by the Prerequisite Installer — Unreal Engine Requirements #
Unreal Engine includes a prerequisite installer that installs everything needed to run the editor and engine, including DirectX components and Visual C++ redistributables. When you install Unreal Engine through Epic Games Launcher, the Launcher installs these prerequisites automatically. You may need to run the prerequisite installer yourself when building Unreal Engine from source or preparing a machine for a particular purpose, such as a new computer that will act as a Swarm agent .
You can find the installer in the Engine/Extras/Redist/en-usfolder under your Unreal Engine installation directory.
Support for 32-bit platforms was removed in Unreal Engine 5.
If you use Perforce to obtain Unreal Engine source code, precompiled binaries are available in the same Engine/Extras/Redist/en-usfolder in the Perforce repository. The installer source is under Engine/Source/Programs/PrereqInstaller.
The following table lists the software installed by the prerequisite installer.
| DirectX Components | Visual C++ Redistributables |
|---|---|
| XInput 1.3 (April 2007) | Visual C++ 2010 CRT |
| X3DAudio 1.7 (February 2010) | Visual C++ 2010 OpenMP Library |
| XAudio 2.7 (June 2010) | Visual C++ 2012 CRT |
| D3D Compiler 4.3 (June 2010) | Visual C++ 2013 CRT |
| D3DCSX 4.3 (June 2010) | Visual C++ 2015 CRT |
| D3DX9 4.3 (June 2010) | Visual Studio 2019 Redistributable |
| D3DX10 4.3 (June 2010) | |
| D3DX11 4.3 (June 2010) |
The most important DirectX components in this list are the XInput, X3DAudio, and XAudio dependencies. They are not included in standard DirectX installations or distributed with Windows by default, so they must be installed manually or distributed with the application.
Graphics Card Drivers #
We recommend the latest stable driver releases from each graphics card manufacturer:
Performance Notes #
This list describes a typical system used at Epic in the source document and provides a reference for game development with Unreal Engine 5:
-
Windows 10 64 bit
-
64 GB RAM
-
256 GB SSD (OS drive)
-
2 TB SSD (data drive)
-
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER graphics card
-
Xoreax Incredibuild (Dev Tools package)
-
Six-core Xeon E5-2643 at 3.4 GHz
If you do not have access to Xoreax Incredibuild (Dev Tools package), the source recommends compiling on a machine with 12 to 16 cores.

UE5 Rendering Feature Requirements #
Some Unreal Engine 5 rendering features have requirements beyond the minimum specifications.
| UE5 Feature | System Requirements |
|---|---|
| Lumen Global Illumination and Reflections | Software ray tracing:
Hardware ray tracing:
|
| Nanite Virtualized Geometry |
|
| Virtual Shadow Maps |
|
| Temporal Super Resolution | Works on graphics cards supporting Shader Model 5, but the limit of 8 UAVs per shader affects performance. Temporal Super Resolution shaders compile with 16-bit types enabled on D3D12 devices supporting Shader Model 6. |
